The Basics of Ceramic Painting

Ceramic painting is a creative hobby, where you can transform blank pieces into unique and personalized works.

Before you get started, here are some tips to consider:
You can choose inspirations using our Pinterest account , or directly on Instagram . Both platforms have a wide range of photos, patterns and ideas... You'll definitely find what you're looking for!

When choosing your piece to decorate, we advise beginners to go for a piece with a flat surface such as a plate, a bowl or a pocket emptier. This will make it easier to create the designs of your choice.

The choice of paints is important, because the colors do not come out the same before and after baking. Also, it is not necessary to wet your brush before starting to paint your piece.

Comparison before and after cooking

To start, choose your brush size, depending on the level of precision you want. To make the colors stand out opaquely, we recommend applying 3 thick coats of paint. Wait a few minutes for the paint to dry between each coat.

Comparison of paint layers

In case of error, or overflow, do not panic! During the workshop, do not hesitate to ask for help from our team, they will be there to assist you.

Little tip: for very fine details, use the styluses available in the Geneviève Ceramicafés. We also recommend that you practice on a sheet of scrap paper to get the hang of it!

The different techniques

When you start painting, don't be afraid to experiment with different techniques. Play with colors and patterns. Ceramic painting is an area where creativity has no limits!

Speckling technique

For a speckled effect: use a clean, dry toothbrush. Dip it in a little paint, position yourself above your piece, and with your finger, brush your brush against the hair to lightly project paint. Repeat the gesture if you want to intensify.

Toothpick technique

If you want to engrave patterns in the paint: you can use a toothpick. To do this, apply three coats of base paint, let it dry for 3 minutes, and dig with the tip of your tool.

Technical points

For the dot technique: First, use a brush upside down. Dip it in the paint and then place the handle on your ceramic for a perfect dot. You do not need to do several layers.

Scotch technique

Finally, you can use tape to make clear boundaries. Stick the tape on the raw ceramic, before applying paint, and paint all your layers of paint. Remove the tape when you no longer need it!

You can also use a pencil to draw on the ceramic: the pencil lines disappear during firing.

Tips for your first time:

  • Experiment: Play with colors, textures and techniques to find what you like!
  • Be patient and indulgent with yourself: Let the paint dry between coats and be patient to achieve the best final result.
  • Don't be afraid of mistakes, everything (or almost everything) can be fixed!
